How to Build a G-Scale Popsicle Stick Bridge Part 7 - Small 'H' Beams and Railings 01-04-14

Blog Entry & Photos by Bob

Small "H' Beams are basically x3 stir sticks glued together.  I recommend first gluing the edge of one stir stick to the middle of another.

Use a fair amount of clothes pegs to keep it at a 90 degree angle, letting it dry before you try attaching the stick to the other side

The stir sticks are around  6 3/4" inches long.  Once the second side has dried, we are going to mark the side every 2 1/4" inches and cut the whole thing into 3 equal parts.

Sanding the end to make them nice and flat, we are going to glue the end of one 'H' beam to the top end of another.

We used fifty-six of these to build the bridge so you will be doing a lot of gluing.

In each of the posts sticking up, we need to drill tiny holes; the diameter of the BBQ skewers (1/8").  The holes need to be 1/4" and 1" down from the top of the posts.

Drilling a tiny hole in the bottom of the BBQ skewers, the pointed end of the next can fit inside.

Pushing the BBQ skewers through we needed to space the posts out 3" from each other.

Cut stir sticks at 6" lengths and glue them staggered across the centers of the cross beams.

Glue the back of the rail posts to fit inside the stitch channels and the end of the cross beam to the top of the main base sandwich beams.

Work from one end of the bridge to the other adjusting for the space between the stitch columns and alternating the BBQ skewers and stir stick walkway planks for added support.

Next Bridge Blog we are going to start the top sandwich beams.
